Global Suicide Rate Analysis From 1985-2016

A project by the data analytics team 4 of SidehustleNG Cohort 5.0 Bootcamp

Introduction

Yeah, It's week 5 of our Bootcamp. This week we were asked work on global suicide rate analysis from 1985-2016. Suicide is death caused by harming oneself with the the intent to die. The live lost to suicide yearly is alarming and it affects all ages both the old and young. People commit suicide for various reasons, depression being one of the most common causes, some violence like child abuse, sexual violence, bullying etc, have lead to people committing suicide in the world. Question remains is suicide the actually the answer ?

Scrapping of Data

Basically one of the challenges of a Data analysis is getting a vital dataset. From week one of our bootcamp data scrapping has been a daunting task for us, but over time we have improved on this, through the help of the project we called "Everybody Go and Look For Dataset". After a long search on the web we came across this dataset used for this analysis in Kaggle.

Cleaning the Data

The following steps were taken to clean dataset;

  • The Human Development Index column has 70% missing values so the empty cells were replaced with N/A.
  • Country-year column was removed because there is already a separate column for both year and country.

Analysis

The following insight was generated from the dataset;

1.Suicide by Sex: Using pie chart, it was discovered that suicide was committed mostly by male than female with 5,188,910 and 1,559,510 respectively.

2.Suicide Per Age-Range: 35-54 age range was discovered to be the age where suicides are committed most with 2,452,141 while age range 5-14years has the lowest with 52,264.

3.Suicide Per Generation: Booomer’s generation has the highest suicide figure with 2,284,498 while Generation Z has the lowest with 15,906 suicide rate. As shown below with a bar graph

5.Lithuania, Sri Lanka and the Russian federation has the highest rate of suicides with 40.42, 35.30 and 34.89 average suicide/100k population respectively.

6.Comparing this with the countries with the lowest and highest GDP per capital shows that there’s no correlation between suicide rate and the country’s economic well-being.

Recommendations

Suicide is not an option. Government and NGO's should organize more seminars and public talks on depression and suicide. People should make the world less toxic and a happier place. People should seek help when going through a lot and see a therapist. When there is life, there is hope.
